The Future Trends of Retail & Residential Developments

Jan 19th 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

This course is free and participants can earn 2 hours towards the State-mandated, four-hour annual training requirements for planning and zoning board members.

The Rockland Municipal Planning Federation will host Donald Elliott, FAICP, as our guest speaker for a virtual educational session entitled, "The Future Trends of Retail and Residential Developments". Mr. Elliott, Director of Clarion Associates, LLC, a national land use consulting firm, will discuss three issues that focus on retail and residential trends. First, he will speak about the Future of Retail (and the Trend Towards Dark Stores)–a development issue that has become even more critical and timely due to the pandemic. He will also discuss how to Correct the National Over-zoning for Commercial and Under-zoning for Residential Development. Lastly, Don will provide ideas on How to Revise Local Zoning to Respond to these Trends. His presentation will also touch on topics related to affordable housing as part of the redevelopment/reuse of commercial/retail land uses, and alternative housing options, such as transforming single-family housing into other housing types.

As Mr. Elliott's land use practice has assisted over 40 communities in updating their comprehensive plans and regulations for housing, zoning, subdivision and land development, he has expertise and first-hand experiences on these land use issues and can provide valuable insight regarding these topics. His presentation is one you do not want to miss!
