March Forward 2016 Winners

NEW CITY, NY - - Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert congratulate schools with outstanding participation in March Forward 2016, Rockland's annual school-based physical activity awareness day. This year's recognition identifies schools within districts that are leading the way in using physically active "Brain Breaks" during the school day and are an example for all to follow.

Congratulations to all participating schools and teachers for getting kids moving! This year's schools with the highest number of participating teachers and students within their grade level are:

  • Clarkstown Central School District: Woodglen Elementary School, Felix Festa Middle School and Clarkstown South High School
  • East Ramapo Central School District: Elmwood Elementary School, Chestnut Ridge Middle School, and Ramapo High School
  • North Rockland Central School District: Thiells Elementary School and Fieldstone Middle School
  • Ramapo Central School District: R.P. Connor Elementary School, Suffern Middle School, and Suffern High School
  • Nanuet Union Free School District: Highview Elementary School
  • Nyack Public Schools: Valley Cottage Elementary School and Nyack High School

Studies show that brief physical activity during class time improves student concentration, memory, mood and cooperation. Regular use of "brain breaks" and general physical fitness has shown to improve academic performance as well as general health and well-being. Many teachers who have participated in March Forward realize how easy it is to use brain breaks and continue to use them throughout the school year. Many teachers were able to engage students with brief bouts of physical activity such as through stretching, moving in place, following a school-wide exercise video, and by integrating movement into their lessons.
