Statement from Rockland County Executive Ed Day
Regarding Proposed 2021 Budget
Late this afternoon my administration was informed of the finalized health insurance rates from New York State's Empire Plan for 2021. Historically health insurance rates are provided by the Empire Plan during the summer months.
The 2021 rates are approximately $2 million less than previously estimated in the Proposed 2021 Budget.
The 2021 Proposed Budget originally estimated a 5% increase based on last year's budget. However, the final rates indicate only a 2% increase, excellent news for Rockland taxpayers.
Earlier this evening my administration submitted a communication to the County Legislature pledging support for and recommending an amendment to the Proposed 2021 Budget which would reduce the proposed property tax levy. These unexpected savings should be passed on directly to the taxpayers.
The pandemic has caused financial strain for so many through job loss or a new need to take care of children who are out of school. It is only right that we attempt to lessen the tax burden on our residents as much as possible without impacting the conservative budgeting practices which have helped the County return from the brink of bankruptcy.
I look forward to the support of the Legislative Minority and hope for the support of those in the Majority as well. This is a win for our residents and an unexpected holiday bonus.
