The Inn Warming Center Ready for Guests
New City, NY, - Rockland County Executive Ed Day and Commissioner of Social Services Joan Silvestri announced the opening of the Rockland County Warming Center. Catholic Charities will once again be operating the Warming Center, known as The Inn, for homeless single adults at the Dr. Robert L. Yeager Health Center in Pomona.
"The causes of homelessness are complex, and this warming center will continue to help the most vulnerable people in our County remain safe and get connected to the services they need. This is about offering a leg up, not a hand out," said County Executive Day.
The Inn will operate from November 1, 2019, through April 30, 2020. During this time, the center has 75 available beds and capacity for additional beds if needed. The Inn will open each night regardless of the temperature and remain open during the day when the temperature, including wind chill, is 32 degrees or below.
"This is a fantastic example of getting services to those who need them most," said Commissioner Silvestri. "We partner with the Departments of Health and Mental Health to match residents with available services. Last operating year we were able to connect 64 guests with permanent housing options."
Last operating year, from November 1, 2018, to April 30, 2019, the average number of overnight guests staying at the warming center was 54, up from 41 per night the prior year. The numbers of guests varied from an average of 36 per night in November 2018 to 55 per night in April 2019. When the temperature was below 32 degrees, the daily census averaged 29 guests.
The Inn offers showers and laundry facilities. Dinner and breakfast are provided for overnight guests and lunch is served during the day when the center is open. There is security on-site when the warming center is operational.
The Inn will open again on Friday, November 1, 2019, at 5 pm. The locations and pick up times are listed below:
Nyack - 6:45 pm & 8:00 pm South Broadway and Burd Street (in front of the First Reformed Church of Nyack).
