The Rockland County Youth Bureau Seeks Trades and Crafts People for Repair Café
New City, NY – County Executive Ed Day today announced that volunteer Repair Coaches are being sought for the 2018 Fall Repair Café, scheduled for Saturday, November 10th at North Rockland High School.
Repair Café is a community event where people can bring broken household items to be repaired for free by volunteer Repair Coaches. There will be several repair stations, including: computers and electronics, lighting, furniture, clothing, toys, small appliances, and jewelry.
Repair Coaches are social people at least 18 years old with high level repair experience in trades or crafts such as small appliances, woodworking/carpentry, electrical, electronics, sewing and costume jewelry.
Volunteers are needed for four hours on Saturday, November 10th at North Rockland High School, located at 106 Hammond Road, Thiells, NY. Repair Coaches will collaborate heavily with the public, with other repair people, and with students looking to learn more about trades.
The event is coordinated by the Rockland Conservation & Service Corps (a program of the Rockland County Youth Bureau), Rockland County Solid Waste Management Authority and the North Rockland School District.
Repair Café is an intergenerational, community-collaborative event that keeps household items out of the waste stream by repairing them instead of throwing them away. The initiative also encourages the sharing of repair expertise.
County Executive Day said, "we increasingly are becoming a "throw away" society, one in which so many of our possessions are replaced at the first sign of a glitch. Preserving repair know-how skills by passing them on to the younger generation is critical to Rockland's shared future and my gratitude to all the amazing Repair Coach volunteers who came out to our last Repair Café event in May. We hope you will bring your expertise and join us again."
