Rockland County Holds Snow School for Road Crews

NEW CITY, NY – Rockland County Highway Department workers as well as road crews from towns and villages attended a two-day snow school to prepare for the winter.

"These crews will be ready no matter what comes our way this winter," said Rockland County Executive Ed Day, who observed a class given in the County highway garage. "We are very proud of our record on snow removal."

During snow school, road crews were given refresher courses about snow-removal techniques, safety, equipment maintenance and other issues.

A representative of a company that makes some of the county's snow trucks was also there to answer questions and demonstrate use of the equipment.

The two-day class was organized by Rockland County Highway Superintendent Charles "Skip" Vezzetti. It was open to County employees as well as town and village road crews.

"We start preparing for winter in September," Vezzetti said. "We have never had to close Rockland County roads due to snow and we want it to stay that way."

Rockland has 30 snow removal trucks that travel 24 routes and clear 170 center line miles of County roads.

Highway crews took the trucks on test runs Tuesday to make sure they were familiar with the routes.

"It's good practice," Vezzetti said. "It's going to be winter soon."
