Rockland County Executive Ed Day Joins Rotary on World Polio Day

NEW CITY, NY – Rockland County Executive Ed Day joined the Rotary Club to mark World Polio Day.

"The world is now 99.9 percent polio-free, but immunization and surveillance must continue in order to prevent the virus from coming back," he said during the group's luncheon to mark the occasion.

He delivered a proclamation to Carole Tjoa, Rotary International Past District Governor, who delivered an update about efforts to end polio in parts of the world where it still occurs.

Other luncheon guests included Jim Damiani, Rotary District Governor; Larry Palant and Jerry Reilly, assistant governors and Phil Roventini and Bob Simon, Rockland PolioPlus representatives.

In 1985 Rotary International launched PolioPlus, pledging to raise funds for vaccines and began a global effort to eradicate polio led by the World Health Organization UNICEF and the Rotary Foundation.

The Rockland County Department of Health offers childhood vaccines, including polio vaccines. For information go here or to: http://bit.ly/2y1foWJ
