Rockland County Executive Ed Day puts extra buses in service over the Tappan Zee Bridge due to planned lane closures

NEW CITY, NY -- Additional buses will be added to the Tappan Zee Express route on Saturday due to the expected traffic congestion caused by planned lane closures on the bridge, Rockland County Executive Ed Day announced.

The Rockland County Department of Transportation will operate a normal Saturday TappanZeexpress schedule. The Rockland-Westchester bus service does not operate on Sunday.

Extra buses will be put into service as needed in an effort to keep as close to the schedule as possible while three northbound lanes on the bridge are closed due to construction related to the new Tappan Zee Bridge.

"This is going to be a very difficult weekend for people who are driving between Westchester and Rockland," Day said. "We hope to make it a little easier by putting these extra buses in service."

Buses are a good way to reduce traffic going over the bridge.

"We encourage people to use mass transit Saturday while this road construction takes place on the Tappan Zee Bridge," said Michael D'Angelo, director of administration and research in the Rockland Transportation Department.

Drivers can park at the park and ride at lot J at the Palisades Center mall, where they can take the TappanZeexpress. No permit is required.

Lane closures will start Friday at 9 p.m. and continue until 2 p.m. Saturday and then begin again at 9 p.m. Saturday and last until 2 p.m. Sunday.

During the majority of this work, three northbound lanes will be closed and one northbound lane will be open to traffic.

All three lanes in the southbound direction will remain open on the Tappan Zee Bridge during the entire weekend.
