D-Day Veteran to Receive WWII Medals on Eve of 71st Anniversary of Japanese Surrender
NEW CITY, NY — Rockland County Executive Ed Day will present Maurice Solomon, 93, of Suffern with five medals he was awarded following his military service during World War II.
WHEN: 11:30 a.m, Thursday
WHERE: Media room, Rockland County Executive's office, 11 New Hempstead Road, New City
Mr. Solomon landed on Omaha Beach on the first day of the Normandy invasion as a member of the 294th Joint Assault Signal Company.
Although he was awarded the medals, he never actually received them. Jerry Donnellan, head of Rockland County Veterans Services, contacted the military on Mr. Solomon's behalf and got the medals for him.
They will be presented to Mr. Solomon on the eve of the 71st anniversary of Japan's surrender on Sept. 1, 1945
He was awarded five medals:
• Good conduct medal
• Asiatic-Pacific medal
• European Theater medal
• Victory medal
• French Croix De Guerre with Palm
