STATEMENT OF COUNTY EXECUTIVE ED DAY ON THE LEGISLATURE'S OVERRIDE OF HIS LINE-ITEM VETOES OF THE 2015 BUDGET
As I said in my veto message, I could not, in good conscience, sign a budget that continues the county down the road to financial decline, including the risk of another near-default. My original proposal made the hard decisions on spending, while following the law. But, the Democratic-controlled Legislature voted to amend its own Deficit Financing Act to continue the status quo and avoid the same hard decisions I faced.
The failure of the Legislature to even consider debate on specific budget items tonight smacks of cowardice. It's crystal clear that the Legislative Majority does not want the people of Rockland County to know they fully support the spending of tax dollars on pure entertainment.
I don't see how we will ever solve our financial problems when a majority of the present Legislature believes their actions are fiscally responsible. The voices of Rockland County taxpayers will surely be heard in the coming months.
